The oldest U.S. auto brand still in existence — and one of the oldest in the world — Buick was founded in 1899 by David Dunbar Buick. That said, the first two Buick vehicles were essentially proofs of concept, and the company didn’t begin producing cars for retail customers until 1904. The big advance for Buick came that same year, when William C. Durant was hired to be the company’s CEO. Himself a well-known auto entrepreneur, Durant also had a hand in founding Chevrolet. He founded General Motors, too, using both Buick and Chevy as building blocks. Certainly helping matters: Buick had become the best-selling auto brand in the United States under Durant’s leadership, delivering its one-millionth vehicle in 1924. Buick’s fortunes have ebbed and flowed since then, but today it’s carved out an important niche as a top source for upscale SUVs with confident comfort and smart capability.
