A BRIEF HISTORY OF DODGE
Horace Elgin and John Francis Dodge were brothers with big ideas who got started in the auto industry in 1900. At the time, they ran a machine shop that eventually counted the Ford Motor Company as one of their biggest customers. Yet neither Horace nor John were satisfied with the status quo. So instead, they began building their own cars in 1913 with the founding of the Dodge Brothers Motor Company. Success soon followed, but so did tragedy. John Dodge died in January 1914 of pneumonia, and his grieving sibling drank himself to death by the end of that year — or so the story goes.
The Dodge business carried on without the brothers for a number of years, enduring ups and downs along the way until the Chrysler Corporation bought it in 1928. Dodge then went on to become one of the biggest mainstream auto brands in the country and was selling more than a million vehicles per year even up to the mid-1980s. And remember, this included Dodge RAM trucks that were part of the division until 2009. Today, the simplified Dodge brand is focused on satisfying enthusiastic drivers around the world!
