A BRIEF HISTORY OF LINCOLN
Although Lincoln and Cadillac are often considered arch-rivals in the auto industry, they were actually founded by the same person: Henry Leyland. He created Cadillac first but left the company when it was purchased by General Motors. Leyland then launched the Lincoln Motor Company in 1917, originally building V12 engines for World War I bombers. He got back into the car business after the war, with the 1920 Lincoln Model L, yet Leyland wasn’t able to successfully make the switch from military planes to civilian automobiles. This led to Lincoln’s purchase by the Ford Motor Company in 1922.
Ford’s financial backing made the difference, and Lincoln quickly established itself as a luxury-car leader that could compete with top-name makers from around the globe. Here in the U.S., Lincoln built the first official presidential limousine in 1924, for Calvin Coolidge, and debuted the Lincoln Continental concept car just before World War II.
